SEMK Botswana Annual Report 2025

Annual Plan 2025: CMaintain contact with several people in Botswana and one person in South Africa. If necessary, ask for, and offer advice, both solicited and unsolicited.
DThis was attempted, but without success. Two requests for assistence in setting up two pre- schools came to nothing. Botswana has different ideas about education, and I saw no point in supporting their ideas. Unicef also recognized the problem in the Botswana education system.

UNICEF flags Botswana’s education without learning 3 December 2025 Sunday Standard Reporter While Botswana is celebrated across Africa for its free education policy and high primary school completion rates, a startling revelation from UNICEF suggests that the country does not know whether its children can actually read or do basic arithmetic. In its newly released report ; “The State of the World’s Children 2025: Ending Child Poverty -Our Shared Imperative” UNICEF exposes a critical gap in Botswana’s education system: the complete lack of data on foundational learning outcomes for children aged 7 to 14, the very stage when most countries assess basic literacy and numeracy.

Annual Plan 2025: Trying to contact the Botswana President and Vice-President to advise them to request financial and practical support (particularly regarding education) from the Dutch government.
There was no response to my letter to Vice President Gaolathe. Which didn't matter, as the Dutch government had almost terminated its development cooperation by then. While the Dutch government was still busy with the Africa Strategy 2023-2032 in 2023 and believed that good development cooperation was important (various variations of the words "we must" appeared approximately 40 times on one page), there's a good chance that development cooperation will be scrapped altogether in 2026. As far as I know, this will happen without an alternative way to support countries in need.

Annual Plan 2025: To point out to the Dutch government the difficult financial situation Botswana is currently in.
It was useless to ask attention for this.

Annual Plan 2025: Search for information about Botswana's development progress and place important news on the SEMK website. Read Botswana newspapers online, including those about the world situation.
Is done.

Annual Plan 2025: Other matters which need to be mentioned.
I have not read in the Sunday Standard, Mmegi, or YourBotswana that the new government has had much success in recovering money from people who committed corruption and fraud. But I have read in those newspapers that they were able to borrow money from sympathetic organizations for important projects.
Meetings have been held to discuss whether the San's request to live in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve can be met.
